Adult Learner Tip #3: Open your ears.
Making music is a listening art, not a visual art. Sure learning how to decipher music notation is important, but it’s the sound that that page represents that is more important. So spend time at the piano simply exploring the sounds. Treat the keys as crayons for your ears. Just as you would doodle with a box of crayons, do not be afraid to doodle on the keys of the piano or try to pick out a melody. You might be surprised as to what you might learn! You wouldn’t paint a picture with your eyes closes, so don’t play music with your ears ” closed.” Listen, listen and listen some more!
